May 3 - 19  ALBANY CIVIC THEATER PRESENTS TRESTLE AT POPE LICK CREEK
Albany Civic Theater
235 Second Avenue - Albany, NY  (518) 462-1297.
Albany Civic Theater presents the final show of our 64th Season, The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek by Naomi Wallace, directed by Brian Avery.
Performances are May 3 - 19, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm. Pay-what-you-will preview is Thursday, May 2.
Regular price tickets are $18, students with a valid ID pay only $10. Reservations will be available at www.albanycivictheater.org. Group discounts are available.

Synopsis:
Pace Creagan, a tough, charismatic girl of 17, ropes Dalton (15) into her greatest obsession: running the trestle that spans the dried-up Pope Lick Creek, playing chicken with the 7:10 train that already claimed the life of a friend. In a town wasted by the economic depression, in which neither Dalton’s nor Pace’s parents can offer them any hope for the future, there is nothing for them to do but court death in order to feel alive. The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek unrolls its spare, bleak beauty, timelines converge and the living and dead collide in this rough, poetic drama which explores inter-generational devastation, economically hopeless circumstances, emerging sexuality, and the wondrous abilities of the human imagination.
Cast: Pace - Caroline Codd,
Dalton - Will Tymeson
Gin - Josephine O'Connor
Dray - Max Beyer
Chas - Matthew Coviello

May 11  JEWS STEP FORWARD
Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse
539 County Road 13 - Old Chatham, NY  (518) 795-3048.
“Jews Step Forward” screening Saturday, May 11, 2019, Potluck at 6:00 PM, film at 7:00 PM, in the Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse, 539 County Route 13, Old Chatham, NY, across from Pitt Hall Road and Powell House.

Jews Step Forward is based upon interviews with 24 American Jewish activists, spanning generations, socioeconomic divides, geographical locales, and extremely varied experiences inside religious practice and observance. Every interviewee began as a devoted follower of the state of Israel, investing their collective hope in the idea of European Jews rising from the ashes of genocide to create a safe haven and utopian society inside the Middle East. Each interviewee reflects upon his or her own journey from that deeply socialized ‘group think’ to a ‘eureka moment,’ where they were compelled to leave Zionist propaganda behind. Jews Step Forward is a confession by informed Jews who deconstruct Zionism, paired with on-the-ground stills and moving footage, which make their words undeniable.

PG-13. This is not a film appropriate for young people or people who are very sensitive to graphic visual imagery - especially of a violent nature.

Free and open to the public. Free refreshments will be served and a moderated discussion will follow. For more information call 518-794-3048. For directions: www.oldchathamquakers.org

May 18  9TH ANNUAL WALK-N-ROLL FOR SPINA BIFIDA
Central Park Schenectady
500 Iroquois Path -
Schenectady, NY  (518) 399-9151.
Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida celebrates the accomplishments of the 166,000 individuals living with Spina Bifida in the United States.

Schenectady, NY, – Spina Bifida Association of Northeastern New York (SBANENY) is holding its 9th annual Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida. The event will be held Saturday, May 18th at the large pavilion in Central Park, Schenectady. In honor of the 25th anniversary of SBANENY in 2018, the event now is preceded with a 5K. 5K registration opens at 7:30 AM ($25.00) and begins at 8:00 AM. The Walk-N-Roll registration opens at 9:00 AM ($5.00) and begins at 10:00AM. Registration is available online at www.spinabifida.securesweet.com/wnr2019. All funds raised are dedicated to local programs and services.
The SBANENY Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida is a family-friendly 3-mile event. The title “Walk-N-Roll” encompasses it’s empowering and inclusive nature. “We call it Walk-N-Roll because many of the people that participate will be using a wheelchair for mobility,” said co-chair, Heather Horwedel. “It is designed to be accessible and include everyone!” The 5K event also allows for participants who use wheelchairs or handcycles.
The Walk-N-Roll is a community event where SBANENY recognizes the individuals, families, and volunteers who make a difference. Recipients of educational scholarships sponsored through the organization are presented with the award during the afternoon ceremony. Madeline White, a student pursuing a degree in occupational therapy is attending her first ever Walk-N-Roll this year to receive her award. Madeline states: “This award will allow me to focus on my studies and work and worry less about making tuition payments. "Receiving this degree is the first step in my occupational therapy career."

Long time friend and volunteer of the organization, DJ Lou Roberts is also being recognized at the Dare to Dream with SBANENY gala this November. DJ Lou has supported the Walk-N-Roll with publicity and day of emcee and DJ needs since its inception. His dedication to the SBANENY cause made him the perfect recipient of the You Make a Difference Award. “We are really excited to recognize DJ Lou this year. His support for the Walk-N-Roll is a huge contributor to the success of the event” said co-chair, Heather Horwedel.

With an anticipated 300+ participants, this event facilitates important connections for the Spina Bifida community that last beyond the Walk-N-Roll. “Young children who have never met someone else with Spina Bifida, parents sharing healthcare information and resources for upcoming medical procedures, and adults discussing how to find accessible housing options, are a few examples of the important connections made at the event,” said Julia Duff, Executive Director. The Walk-N-Roll is more than a fundraiser for these families. Julia Duff, Executive Director continues, “this walk helps SBANENY reach people facing the challenges of Spina Bifida while helping people connect to each other for support and information. It is incredibly rewarding to see.”

New York State population estimates suggest there are 10,000 individuals living with Spina Bifida in New York State. “As the only affiliate chapter of the National Spina Bifida Association in New York State, we respond to requests for information from beyond our service area of Northeastern New York” said Executive Director, Julia Duff. Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States affecting an estimated 166,000 individuals. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn’t close completely. The U.S. Public Health Service recommends that all women of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid daily to reduce the risk of having a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defects (NTDs), such as Spina Bifida.
To register and/or make a donation for the SBANENY Walk-N-Roll, for information about Spina Bifida, or the services of SBANENY, go to www.sbaneny.org or call the office at 518-399-9151.

You are welcome to bring amps and drums BUT set up and break down is part of your 10 minutes. The host draws names from a bowl at 7:30. May 30 - June 1  30TH ANNUAL NEW YORK STATE FOSTER CARE AND ADOPTION CONFERENCE
Hilton Albany
40 Lodge Street - Albany, NY  (646) 688-4321.
Transitions and Connections | Moving Forward on the Journey and Building Community Along the Way

Featuring Keynote Speakers
Nim Tottenham, PhD. of Columbia University’s Developmental Affective Neuroscience Lab
Adoptee Shawn Kittelsen featured on TLC’s Long Lost Family

Aimed at parents and professionals alike, the conference brings leaders in the child welfare field to New York and offers a variety of topical workshops designed to deepen the knowledge of attendees, make connections to other parents and professionals and give attendees tools they can bring home and share in their community. Nationally-known plenary speakers and workshop presenters share their knowledge and expertise to help participants gain perspective, increase skills, and learn to appreciate the positives.

Connection is essential to our survival. Our ability to connect is one of things that make us human. Ironically, for all that we do for children in foster care and those who are adopted, honoring and nurturing connections sometimes fall by the wayside. Transition, so much a part of foster care and adoption, is just one of the ways that this plays out.

Our 2019 conference, Transitions and Connections, will highlight and explore innovative methods that can elevate and sustain the connections that children and adults make with others and that create cohesive systems of services to support effective, meaningful transitions for everyone.
