MAY 2020 - CAPITAL REGION CALENDAR OF EVENTS

May 1 - 31    MAY ART IN PIBLIC PLACES SHOWS WILL BE ONLINE
Saratoga Arts
320 Broadway - Saratoga Springs, NY  (518) 584- 4132.
Our next batch of Art in Public Places shows for May will be online by May 1st! We will be rotating these online shows monthly/bimonthly, based on which site the artists were originally supposed to have their shows. Some sites are bimonthly sites. All artwork is for sale! Lets help support these local artists!

Because Saratoga Arts and the majority of our Art in Public Places locations must remain closed for the time being due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided to present our Art in Public Places exhibitions in an online format! We hope you enjoy this month’s shows. If you wish to purchase artwork, please contact Rebecca Zeh, Exhibitions Coordinator, at rzeh@saratoga-arts.org for more information! Let's help support these artists!

This month we are featuring artwork by the following Saratoga Arts' member artists, a group show featuring artwork by Members of Southern Saratoga Art Society, Harry Walton II, KC Mathers, Carole Warburton, Jane Agee and Miriam Romais!

Art in Public Places is a Member-Exclusive program which features monthly or bi-monthly exhibits of members’ artists’ work in various locations throughout the county. The goal of the Art in Public Places program (under normal circumstances) is to present artwork in easily accessible spaces throughout the Saratoga Region and give artists at all points in their artistic careers an opportunity to show and sell their work. Not a member of Saratoga Arts yet? Go to saratoga-arts.org to register today! Becoming a member is a great way to support Saratoga Arts and it opens up some great opportunities for artists!
For any questions regarding exhibitions programs at Saratoga Arts, contact Rebecca Zeh, Exhibitions Coordinator at rzeh@saratoga-arts.org

Join us and the University at Albany as we come together to make a positive difference in our community.

May 2  SPRING BIRD WALK
John B. Staalesen Vanderheyden Preserve
Cobblestone Lane  - Troy, NY
Early morning in the spring before the leaves are out is the best time to look for spring migrating and local resident birds. We will also identify birds by their courtship songs and calls. Bring binoculars and any bird guides. Expect some short walks near the parking area into field, forest and stream and wetland edge. You will be delighted how an urban preserve can be great bird habitat. Suitable for birders of all levels, including beginners.
Questions? Contact trip leader Jim de Waal Malefyt at dewaalmalefyt@gmail.com.
Suggested donation of $5, payable on day of event. This event is part of the 2020 Joint Outings series, sponsored by Rensselaer Land Trust and Rensselaer Plateau Alliance.

May 4  WEBINAR: MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS 101
Online
194 Washington Avenue (Online) - Albany, NY

The goal of this webinar is to reduce stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs by promoting a comprehensive understanding of mental health, the importance of self-care and treatment-seeking behaviors, and hope for recovery.

Why is this important?
Consider this: the median time between the onset of mental illness (when symptoms first appear) and when an individual gets appropriate treatment is 10 years. During that time, a person is likely experiencing periods of increased symptomology and periods of wellness. Mental Health and recovery are dependent on an individual’s ability to recognize and manage where he/she is each day on the continuum between wellness and illness and take care accordingly, an important piece to the quality of life. Education and early intervention promote wellness.
Please register for Mental Health & Wellness 101 on May 4, 2020, 12 PM - 1 PM EDT at:

Online
194 Washington Avenue (Online) - Albany, NY

Why Mental Health First Aid?

This webinar will introduce you to the Mental Health First Aid curriculum and highlight the utility It can provide in day to day experiences. Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone who wants to learn how to help an individual who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or concern.

What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind Mental Health First Aid demonstrates that it makes people feel more comfortable managing a crisis situation and builds mental health literacy — helping the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Specifically, studies found that those who trained in Mental Health First Aid have greater confidence in providing help to others, greater likelihood of advising people to seek professional help, improved concordance with health professionals about treatments, and decreased stigmatizing attitudes.

Course Details
Mental Health First Aid certification, which must be renewed every three years, provides trainees with the ability to:

Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis, and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
Use a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional help.
Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.
Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.
Please register for Why Mental Health First Aid on May 7, 2020, 12 PM - 12:30 PM EDT at:

May 16   SPRING WILDFLOWER WALK
Berlin High School
17400 NY-22 - Cherry Plain, NY

Learn new spring wildflowers at the Rensselaer Land Trust’s Bear’s Den Preserve near Cherry Plain. This is a perfect hike to see many spring wildflowers, including uncommon ones, at their best and enjoy this unique geological preserve. A steward surprised a bobcat at the cave last winter. The cave was known to early settlers and you can still see evidence of their visits here. Tom Phillips, avid botanist, will help us find and identify the area’s wide variety of flowers. The walk will be a couple of miles long, with one steep hill.
Questions? Contact trip leader Tom Phillips at mossvet@nycap.rr.com.
Suggested donation of $5, payable on day of event. This event is part of the 2020 Joint Outings series, sponsored by Rensselaer Land Trust and Rensselaer Plateau Alliance.

Online
194 Washington Avenue (Online) - Albany, NY

The goal of this webinar is to introduce career opportunities within the behavioral health field, discuss benefits of entering the field, and identify varied entry points across the field.

There are many career opportunities within the field with various entry points that this webinar will explore.

Who should join this webinar?
This webinar is open to all ages, youth exploring career opportunities, individuals re-entering the workforce, and individuals looking for a career change.

Please register for Workforce Development & Outreach on May 21, 2020, 12 PM - 1 PM EDT at:

May 31  SUNNY SUNDAYS
miSci
15 Nott Terrace Heights - Schenectady, NY  (518) 382-7890.
Sunny Sundays are your opportunity to take a safe glimpse at the sun! Educators from the Dudley Observatory at miSci will operate our 14inch telescope inside the roll-top roof observatory, allowing visitors to safely look at the sun and search for sunspots. Other objects such as the moon and planets may also be visible. In the event of poor weather, we will have hands-on activities indoors instead.

The observatory will be open from 1-2:30pm every Sunday. miSci galleries will be open continuously from 12-5pm. Access to the observatory or activities is free with museum admission ($12 Adult, $10 Senior, $8 Child).
