September 14 - 16   FRESH GRASS FESTIVAL 2018
MASS MoCA
1040 MASS MoCA Way - North Adams, MA

An opportunity for enthusiasts to both appreciate and participate, FreshGrass is a family-friendly festival, brimming with bright talent on four stages, and also in our galleries, brick-lined courtyards, and grassy field, produced in partnership by MASS MoCA, the FreshGrass Foundation, and No Depression.

Music starts early in the museum courtyards, moves to our spacious (and grassy!) urban concert meadow, and then continues until past your bedtime with wild and woolly late-night barn dances in the Hunter Center on Friday and Saturday nights. The lineup is jam-packed with guitar gods and banjo gurus, traditionalists, and trailblazers — artists you already know and love interspersed with FreshGrass discoveries. Taken together, it’s an expansive group of performers who both draw on the past and look to the future. We like to think of it as “great music uprooted.”

The FreshGrass Award celebrates new talent, with cash prizes to the contest winners. Finalists in the band, banjo, fiddle, and the No Depression singer-songwriter categories perform for a panel of industry professionals on Saturday and Sunday of the festival, with winners announced on Sunday afternoon. Open to all festival-goers, the contest showcases the future of bluegrass and roots music when the bands play original and traditional tunes. With prizes totaling $25,000, grand prize winners receive a performance spot at next year’s festival, recording sessions at Compass Records, and handcrafted instruments from festival sponsors.

September 15  SHEN PARENTS: DOCUMENTARY FILM SCREENING
Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library
475 Moe Road - Clifton Park, NY  (518) 588-2123.
Join Shen Parents of Children with 504s/IEPs for a screening of two documentaries by Dr. Richard Lavoie, a nationally known expert on children with learning disabilities.

The first, F.A.T. City: How Difficult Can This Be? shows a simulation of what it feels like to be a student with a learning disability in a classroom by putting a group of parents, teachers, and other professionals who work with children in the shoes of children with learning disabilities. This highly-acclaimed program has provided a life-changing experience for many who have viewed it. Many walk away with a new understanding and empathy of the difficulties faced by children with learning disabilities. Whether the viewer is a parent, teacher, special education teacher, special education administrator, or other professional who works with or on behalf of children with learning disabilities, this is a must-see video.

The second documentary is The Motivation Breakthrough, in which Dr. Lavoie debunks the myths regarding how to motivate students with learning disabilities, including how traditional motivational techniques often don’t work and why. In place of those myths, Dr. Lavoie provides useful tips based upon his many years of experience working with children with learning disabilities. Additionally, Dr. Lavoie explains the danger of the self-esteem impacts that children with disabilities suffer when faced with a lack of understanding and uninformed use of motivation techniques that don’t work.

The event is free and all are welcome to attend. Shen Parents hope that in addition to parents, there will also be many school professionals in attendance, including school board members.

Empire State Aerosciences Museum

250 Rudy Chase Drive - Glenville, NY (518) 377-2191.
The Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at 250 Rudy Chase Drive (off Route 50) in Glenville, NY will host its monthly all you can eat breakfast on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 8:30 am – 10:30. Enjoy an assortment of pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage, potatoes, juice, coffee, tea and more.
As a special treat, at 10 am, author George Leopold of Virginia, will speak about the life of Astronaut Gus Grissom and his book “Calculated Risk: The Supersonic Life and Times of Gus Grissom” on the official launch date of the book. Unlike other American astronauts, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom never had the chance to publish his memoirs, save for an account of his role in the Gemini program, before the tragic launch pad fire on January 27, 1967, which took his life and those of Edward White and Roger Chaffee. Drawing on extensive interviews with fellow astronauts, NASA engineers, family members, and friends of Gus Grissom, Leopold delivers a comprehensive survey of Grissom’s life that places his career in the context of the Cold War and the history of human spaceflight. Mr. Leopold will be signing his book that day, available for purchase from the Museum. Open to the Public.

September 15    37TH ANNUAL FALL SEASON OF LEAF PEEPER CONCERTS
Hudson Hall

327 Warren Street - Hudson, NY (413) 644-0007..
The opening concert, on September 15, will feature the return of extraordinary violinist Tim Fain to Hudson Hall, where he performed last year to an excited audience. With his adventuresome spirit and vast musical gifts, Fain has emerged as a mesmerizing presence on the music scene. The "charismatic young violinist with a matinee idol profile, strong musical instincts, and first rate chops" (Boston Globe) is seen and heard in the film Black Swan, and he gives "voice" to the violin of the lead actor in the hit film 12 Years a Slave, as he did with Richard Gere's violin in the feature film Bee Season. This will be a multimedia performance that will include work by: J.S. Bach, Phillip Glass, Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and opera composer Missy Mazolli (whom Time Out magazine called “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart”), as well as Lev Zhurbin’s poignant Sicilienne and William Bolcom’s ever-popular and jaunty Graceful Ghost Rag.

September 28 - 30    DUALITY'S END: COMPUTATIONAL PSYCHIATRY AND THE COGNITIVE SCIENCE OF REPRESENTATION
Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health

57 Interlaken Road - Stockbridge, MA (413) 931-5230.
2018 Erikson Institute Fall Conference for Scientists, Researchers, Scholars, and Clinicians.

This conference is generously sponsored by Bill and Deborah Ryan.

This conference offers an exciting opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange between the psychology and cognitive science of representation and the rapidly growing field of computational psychiatry. Ultimately, we seek to better understand the mind-brain connection in health and disease, moving toward an end to the enduring mind-brain dichotomy in the conceptualization and treatment of mental illness. This conference brings together, for the first time, these two important areas of cognitive science and synthesizes their differing perspectives in a way that is clinically meaningful.

Tuition: $295/person (if lodging at Kripalu); $405/person (if lodging off-site)
