APRIL 2019 - CAPITAL REGION CALENDAR OF EVENTS

April 1 - 14  COLORAMA FROM THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM
The Hyde Collection
161 Warren Street - Glens Falls, NY  (518) 792-1761.
EXHIBITIONS
Colorama from the George Eastman Museum
Wood Gallery
January 13 through April 14
For more than four decades, enormous advertisements displayed in New York City's Grand Central Terminal affirmed a picturesque notion of everyday American life. The 18-foot-by-60-foot images depicted an idyllic nation: beautiful landscapes, holiday celebrations, world-changing historical events, family road trips, and patriotism. This exhibition examines the captivating advertisements, offering insight into America, and the histories of advertising, photography, and technology. Thirty-six reproduced images from the George Eastman Museum depict an idealized past for a new generation, and serve as a welcome reintroduction for those who lived through the decades that helped shape photography. Organized by the George Eastman Museum.

April 6  HEALTHY DOG EXPO
Desmond Hotel, Albany, NY
660 Albany Shaker Road - Albany, NY  (559) 372-6437.
We love our dogs. If you ask any dog lover what they want most, it’s their best friend by their side forever. Yet today, it seems our dogs battle more health challenges than ever. Rising cancer rates, musculoskeletal injuries, autoimmune disease, organ failure, and more. Lifespans are shorter. More veterinary visits are needed to manage problems, at an ever-rising cost. We need to reverse this trend, and give our dogs the long and healthy lives they deserve.

That’s why the Healthy Dog Expo is coming to Albany! The Expo will bring internationally respected authorities that are on the cutting edge of natural dog health, feeding, and veterinary care. With talks, demonstrations, exhibits, and vendors, Expo guests will have a variety of ways to learn and share their experiences.

April 14    ESYO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMING TCHAIKOVSKY 4
Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
30 2nd Street - Troy, NY (518) 273-0038.
Led by new Music Director Carlos Ágreda, Empire State Youth Orchestra's Symphony Orchestra spring concert is a celebration of community spirit. Our journey begins with Brazilian composer M. Camargo Guarnieri's vibrant "Three dances for orchestra," inspired by the carnival celebrations and parades that fill the streets of Brazilian cities. Anchored by Tchaikovsky's powerful Fourth Symphony, we explore the power of fate, destiny, and hope shaped by a sense of community.

The concert also features the winner of ESYO’s Annual Lois Lyman Concerto Competition, cellist William Han. At 16 years old, the young virtuoso will lead the orchestra in a passionate performance of Shostakovich's "Cello Concerto No. 1." Named after a music teacher and one of ESYO’s founding members, the Lois Lyman Concerto Competition has showcased some of the area’s finest musicians since 1985.

April 28  BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF THE CAPITAL AREA'S 2019 KEARNEY CUP DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT
Marcelle Athletic Center
515 Loudon Road - Loudonville, NY  (518) 462-5528.
For the ninth consecutive year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area (BGCCA) will host our annual Kearney Cup Dodgeball Tournament. Named after board member, former club kid and lifelong supporter, John Kearney, tournament proceeds have been integral in providing educationally enriching experiences to our most disadvantaged youth.

Taking place on April 28th at Siena College, the tournament features a wide variety of dodgeball teams from financial institutions to local non-profits to Albany's many unions. Each year people and organizations come out to display their teamwork and athletic skills in a quest for bragging rights, as well as the prestigious Kearney Cup Trophy. While the tournament itself is a heated battle to see who comes out on top, the intensity is only over-shadowed by our supporters' passion and dedication to providing opportunity and great futures for youth throughout the Capital Area.
