October 5  PROTECTING YOUR LEGACY: PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR LAND
Education Center, Blue Skies Travel (New Location)
2 Pittsfield Avenue - East Greenbush, NY  (315) 424-9485.
A Workshop on Legacy Planning to Keep Forests as Forests

A workshop for landowners: Experts from Cornell University will share resources to help landowners know their options, have conversations, and make decisions to ensure their wishes are addressed for the future of their property. An attorney will present about the legal aspects of estate planning.

Few challenges faced by landowners are more important than the issue of passing their land and its responsibilities on to the next generation. Many landowners want to conserve their woods but don’t know about conservation options and how to involve family members in the future ownership and operation of their lands. Protecting Your Legacy: Planning for the Future of Your Land will help landowners by connecting them with legacy planning resources to help them consider the future of their forests. An attorney will present on the legal aspects of estate planning tools and options, and a panel of landowners will discuss their conservation challenges and decisions.

The workshop will discuss conservation and estate planning options using our publications: Protecting Your Legacy and Using a Will to Pass on Your Land. These publications and others are available on yourlegacyny.org.

Professionals who work with landowners in areas relating to estate planning are also encouraged to attend this event.

Registration for this workshop is required. $25 per person covers handouts, resource materials, light morning refreshments and lunch.

Register at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/PYL_RPA2019_231

Questions? Contact Kristina A. Ferrare, kaf226@cornell.edu or (315) 424-9485 ext 321.

This workshop is made possible by a grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and a collaboration between Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Science, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Lavelle and Finn, LLP.

October 12  INSATIABLE: COOKING UP INNOVATION
miSci
15 Nott Terrace Heights -
Schenectady, NY  (518) 382-7890.
Exhibit Overview
From wood fire to sous vide, Insatiable: Cooking Up Innovation explores the technology that facilitates the chemical transformations of sugars, proteins and fats when grilled, boiled, broiled and baked.
This exhibition is a celebration of humankind’s ever-evolving innovation in preparing food, a story that is local, national, and global. From engineering outdoor grills to microwaves, GE and other organizations set the world’s trends in how we prepare food.
In this hands-on, interactive exhibit, explore the inner workings of toasters, skillets, convection currents, refrigerators, solar ovens, pressure cookers, and more!

Exhibit Description
A journey through human curiosity, creativity and innovation, The Art & Science of Cooking is an immersive 5,000 square-foot traveling museum exhibit that showcases hundreds of artifacts, objects, artwork, and hands-on interactives that testify to our exploration of technology and engineering in the pursuit of creating culinary marvels as ubiquitous as a locally roasted cup of coffee.
Armed with an array of fuels — wood, charcoal, gas, and electricity — we boil, bake, grill, roast, fry, and “nuke” our food in a multitude of gadgets. Whether in smart pots, air fryers, or pressure cookers made of everything from clay to Teflon, preparing food is a daily ritual we now take for granted. However, the introduction of cooking food more than a million and a half years ago is a uniquely human practice. Cooked food provided
humans with more energy for brain and body than raw food and catapulted the evolution of humans.
The Art & Science of Cooking presents this remarkable story through the display of “firsts” – the first iron ovens, electric ovens, toasters – past and present state-of-the-art gadgets, a walk through time imagery, and hands-on interactives that will delight visitors of all ages and interests by immersing them in the science, technology, engineering, and math we apply every day to create the perfect art – food.

October 19  TRAINING IN BYSTANDER INTERVENTION
Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse
539 County Route 13 - Old Chatham, NY  (518) 610-3735.
Training in Bystander Intervention Saturday, October 19, 2019, Potluck at 6:00 PM, Training at 7:00 PM at the Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse, 539 County Route 13, Old Chatham NY, across from Pitt Hall Road and Powell House.

Spee Braun and Shirley Edgerton will offer a session of training in Bystander Intervention- Have you ever wished you’d spoken up when witnessing a stranger harassing another stranger, whether because of their religion, race, gender, or other aspect of their presentation and being in the world? What held you back? Have you intervened but felt you could have done a better job of it?

This training will teach you how to safely intervene in public acts of harassment. We'll explore "do's and don'ts" of bystander intervention and consider scenarios and how to respond effectively, taking the lead from the person being harassed.

Spee Braun works for Save the Children and other humanitarian organizations to improve people’s lives in the United States and around the world. As a Quaker, she’s committed to peace and social justice endeavors and received training in bystander intervention from the American Friends Service Committee. She resides with her family in the Quaker Intentional Village in East Chatham, NY, where the community strives for Spirit-focused lives of simplicity, sustainability, and joy.

Shirley Edgerton is tasked with bringing knowledge of the not so simply defined issue of “Cultural Competence” to school systems, city governments and communities. Shirley previously presented a program describing a trip to South Africa with several mentors and a number of local teen age girls, where they volunteered at an orphanage for a week of assistance and learning. This trip was part of the ROPE (Rites of Passage and Empowerment) program she founded nine years ago.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information call 518-794-3048. For directions: www.oldchathamquakers.org
