MARCH 2019 - CAPITAL REGION CALENDAR OF EVENTS

March 1 - 30  FROM THE VAULT STAFF SELECTIONS
The Hyde Collection
161 Warren Street - Glens Falls, NY  (518) 792-1761.
From the Vault: Staff Selections
Whitney-Renz and Hoopes galleries
January 20 to March 31
With approximately 4,000 works in The Hyde's permanent collection, it seems impossible to pick a favorite. But Museum staff members — education, administration, security, operations, visitor services, finance, and curatorial — have done just that. With selections that vary from prominent artists including Winslow Homer, Pablo Picasso, and Elihu Vedder, and significantly more obscure artists such as Greg O'Halloran and the Master of Monte Oliveto, From the Vault provides a deeper look into The Hyde's collection and insight into the people who do the behind-the-scenes work at the Museum.
(10-5pm daily, noon-5 pm on Sundays, closed Mondays)

March 1 - April 14  COLORAMA FROM THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM
The Hyde Collection
161 Warren Street - Glens Falls, NY  (518) 792-1761.
EXHIBITIONS
Colorama from the George Eastman Museum
Wood Gallery
January 13 through April 14
For more than four decades, enormous advertisements displayed in New York City's Grand Central Terminal affirmed a picturesque notion of everyday American life. The 18-foot-by-60-foot images depicted an idyllic nation: beautiful landscapes, holiday celebrations, world-changing historical events, family road trips, and patriotism. This exhibition examines the captivating advertisements, offering insight into America, and the histories of advertising, photography, and technology. Thirty-six reproduced images from the George Eastman Museum depict an idealized past for a new generation, and serve as a welcome reintroduction for those who lived through the decades that helped shape photography. Organized by the George Eastman Museum.

A Secret History of River People Photo Display

Life along a river is one of the themes in our 2019 Book of the Year, Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate.

A Secret History of American River People is a project created by Wes Modes, a Santa Cruz, California artist whose work is focused on social practice, sculpture, performance and new media work. He holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the Digital Art and New Media program at the University of California Santa Cruz. Wes has worked for years to build a collection of personal stories of people who live and work on the river from the deck of his recreated mid-century shantyboat over a series of epic river voyages. Photos of his most recent river voyages are displayed in the large glass display case located under the stairs of the Library. You may also visit his project website at http://peoplesriverhistory.us/category/blog/

March 9  DON'T MAKE ME PULL OVER! w/RICHARD RATAY
The Hyde Collection
161 Warren Street - Glens Falls, NY  (518) 792-1761.
In Don't Make Me Pull Over: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip, Richard Ratay examines a cultural phenomenon as iconic as Fourth of July fireworks, baseball, and apple pie: the American family road trip. Through the gentle filter of nostalgia, Ratay recalls getting lost, running out of gas, hours of car games, and napping on the rear-window ledge of his father's Cadillac as his family of six headed south in search of warmer weather, golf courses, and adventure. At 2 pm on Saturday, March 9, at The Hyde Collection, the author will share humorous stories about his family's time on American highways. With the bright images of Colorama as a backdrop, Ratay will talk about how road trips became an American birthright, faded out of style, and why they're making a comeback. The event is co-presented with Northshire Bookstore, which will have copies of Don't Make Me Pull Over available for purchase. Ratay will be available to sign copies before the presentation. Admission is $5 for members and $8 for non-members. To register, call 518-792-1761, ext. 310, or email adminassist@hydecollection.org. This event is made possible with funding from the Robert Lehman Foundation.

March 9  INTO ETERNITY
Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse
539 County Road 13 - Old Chatham,, NY  (518) 794-3048.
“Into Eternity” screening Saturday, March 9, 2019, Potluck at 6:00 PM, film at 7:00 PM, in the Old Chatham Quaker Meetinghouse, 539 County Route 13, Old Chatham, NY, across from Pitt Hall Road and Powell House.

The world’s nuclear power plants have generated an estimated 300,000 tons of high-level radioactive waste that must be safely stored for 100,000 years or more and every year, they generate another 12,000 metric tons. Into Eternity explores the scientific and philosophical questions long-term nuclear waste storage poses.

Structured as a message to future generations, the film focuses on the Onkalo waste repository under construction in Finland, one of the first underground storage facilities. Onkalo is a gigantic network of tunnels being carved out of bedrock that will start receiving Finland’s nuclear waste in 2020. Once the repository is full, in about 100 years, it will be closed and hopefully remain sealed for at least 100,000 years.

Into Eternity not only raises questions about the possibility of long-term nuclear waste storage, but also invites reflection on the limits of science and human knowledge, along with our responsibility to future generations.

Free and open to the public. Free refreshments will be served and a moderated discussion will follow. For more information call 518-794-3048. For directions: www.oldchathamquakers.org

March 24  LIFE ALONG THE RIVER
Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library
475 Moe Road - Clifton Park, NY  (518) 952-7077.
Local author and Waterford Town Historian, Russ VanDervoort, will present a program about life along the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. He is the author of Canal Canaries and Other Tough Old Birds - a fascinating family memoir chronicling the lives of a successful and hard-working New York State canal family. VanDervoort family members worked New York State waterways for two centuries. They captained tugboats on the Hudson River and Erie Canal, lived year-round on the water, and witnessed countless changes, from slow mule-driven tows, to the steam engine, and to the massive diesel-powered barges of the twentieth century Champlain Barge Canal. He will bring photos and other family artifacts to his talk.
Russ will have copies of his book available for purchase following the event.
